Gerrit Hendrik Dyke

By Bentheimers International Society

Hand-drawn map of Uelsen where Frederik Veldhuis was born.

A portion of General Major von Le Coq‘s Grafschaft Bentheim map (1805) depicting Uelsen. Gerrit Hendrik Dyke was born here in 1803.

Gerrit Hendrik Dyke (Dyk, Dijk, Diek) was born in Uelsen on November 12, 1803 to Albert Dijk and Jenne Grobbe. Albert worked as a Timmerman or carpenter in Uelsen, and Gerrit Hendrik was a carpenter as well.

The Gerrit Hendrik Dyk Family in Grafschaft Bentheim

Gerrit Hendrik married Jenne De Groot, the daughter of Hendrik De Groot and Egberdina Jansen. She was born in Bauerhausen around 1810. They had seven children:

  1. Jennechien—born on 1830 in Nieuwleusden;
  2. Albert—born in 1838;
  3. Hendrik Jan—born in 1840;
  4. Hendrika (Reka)—born in 1844;
  5. Fenne—born in 1847 in Bauerhausen. She died in 1850 and is buried in Germany;
  6. Frederik—born in 1850; and
  7. Jan Hendrik (John)—born in 1855.

Jenne died in Bauerhausen on June 8, 1860 at the age of 52 years of Borstkwall, or chest complaint.

Emigrating to West Michigan

In 1866, six years after his wife Jenne died, Gerrit Hendrik left Germany for America. His children Hendrik Jan and Jennechien had already emigrated in 1865 with her husband Harm Hendrik Broene and their children. Albert followed in 1867, Jan Hendrik in 1871, and Frederik in 1872. Hendrika would leave with her family in 1879 or early 1880.

It appears that once he was in Michigan, Gerrit Hendrik lived with his daughter Jennechien and her family in Graafschap. Later he lived with son Albert and his family in Allendale.

Gerrit Hendrik Dyke died on August 12, 1876 in Allendale and is buried in the Allendale Township Cemetery.

  1. I believe Gerrit Hendrik Dyke died in Graafschap and was buried in Graafschap, Mi. Gerrit was living with his son Albert. Albert did not move to Allendale until 1881. Gerrit died in 1876. A dutch obituary by Albert Dyke was posted in Graafschap. There is no record of a Gerrit Hendrick Dyke for Allendale Cemetery. Graafschap Cemetery has an A. Dyke that purchased 8 burial lots. In one is baby Dyke. Albert lost two young girls. One must be baby Dyke. There are two more graves in A. Dyke burial plot. They are listed as unknown. I believe one of them is Gerrit Hendrik Dyke. Please send a reply. If you believe Gerrit Hendrik is buried in Graafschap, how does the verbiage get changed above that says Gerrit died in Allendale and is buried in Allendale?

    If you have a Orbit I would like to see it? It is not clear if he died in his daughters home in Graafschap or his son’s home in Allendale, Ottawa, Michigan.
    Thank You.

    1880 Jennechien Dyk Broene Laketown, Allegan, Michigan, United States
    1880 Albert Gerrirsz Dyk Filmore, Allegan, Michigan, United States
    1882 Hendrike Dyk was born in Allendale,
    1880 Hendrik Jan Dyk Filmore, Allegan, Michigan, United States
    1879-1880 Henderika Dyk immigrated to the US
    1880 Frederik Dyk Overeisel, Allegan, Michigan, United States
    1880 Jan Hendrik Dyk Fillmore, Allegan, Michigan, United States
    So no one was in Allendale until after 1882 so
    Gerrit Obituary is written in August 12, 1876 in Graafschap, Allegan, Michigan, United States,

    The great Fire was in 1871 and many of the wooden markers were burned.

    I do not understand Egbert there is no record of such a son but, a grandson?
    End of survey of Dyk, Dijk, Dyke, not Van Dyke. Allegan County should have a death record for 1876.

  4. Hello.
    I would like to find the actual immigration record of Gerrit Hendrik Dyk my great great grandfather. If you could direct me to this information it would be greatly appreciated. The book authored by Lemon has his parents listed as Jan Dyk and Berendine Dykman. Your web site has the parents listed as Albert Dyk and Jenne Grobbe. I believe the Jan Dyk to be the correct one.
    I also believe there were two Gerrit Dyke’s , cousins and they are being confused. One born in 1803 and the other in 1812.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    • Hi Pauline, Loren’s book was written before the German church book records (OFB, Ortsfamilienbuecher) were put online, so the OFB record has the correct dates. You can find Gerrit Hendrik Dyk’s information in the OFB by following this link: https://www.online-ofb.de/famreport.php?ofb=uelsen&ID=I18397&nachname=Diek&lang=de . Not all of his children are listed there because the Dyk family were members of the illegal Altreformierte church (“Old Reformed,” much like the Christian Reformed Church), not the state Reformed church. I will email you some more information. Thanks, Heather

  5. Also, I believe, that
    Gerrit Dyk had another son. Engbert Diek that did not immigrate to The USA. He is not listed as a child.

  6. According to Ottawa County Register of Deeds, Albert Dyke purchased his first 2.5 acres in Allendale Township in 1877. This is one year after his father Gerrit Hendrick Dyke passed away on August 12, 1876. The census for Fillmore Township in Allegan County for 1880 has Albert Dyke and his family listed there. This shows that Albert was still living in the Graaschap area. Albert moved to Allendale Township in 1881.
